The Securities Depository Center Participates in the 8th Conference Of Central Securities Depositories

The Securities Depository Center of Jordan (SDC) participated in the 8th Conference of Central Securities Depositories (CSD8) that was held from 27 to 29 April, 2005 in New York. The SDC was represented by Mr. Walid Zurub, a board member and Mr. Samir Jaradat, the CEO.

The CSD8 Conference focused on the key issues and trends most relevant to all Central Securities Depositories worldwide. Senior representatives of Central Securities Depositories (CSDs), clearinghouses and Central Counter Parties took part in this Conference along with guest speakers from industry associations, regulators and other experts.

A number of 180 delegate participated in the Conference which gave its attendees the opportunity to enlarge their network of contacts with their industry peers, to share valuable knowledge and experiences on the challenges and opportunities faced by the industry and to participate in enriching discussions with leading professionals from all over the world.

The Conference discussed a number of issues such as corporate actions and the global challenges, risk management and payment and securities settlement systems, which led to recommending establishing an international unified glossary; in addition to adopting further recommendation on corporate actions and risk management.

In addition, at the CSD8, the African and Middle East Depositories Association (AMEDA) was established by the following nine CSDs: Dubai DIFX, Egypt Misr For Clearing, Settlement And Depository, Kuwait Clearing Co, Jordan Securities Depository Center, Lebanon MIDCLEAR, Mauritius Central Depository & Settlement Co Ltd, Muscat Depository Co, South Africa STRATE Ltd and Tunisia STICODEVAM.

AMEDA was established for the benefit of its member community as an elective, inter-professional and regional facility to foster a spirit of cooperation, reciprocity and harmony among members. The Association will seek to facilitate member, market institution, financial intermediary and investor awareness of the region, and of activities of the association and its members.

The founding members selected Mr. Mohamed Abdel Salam from Misr for Clearing, Settlement and Central Depository as Chairman and Mr. Samir Jaradat (Jordan) as Vice Chairman. The Association’s headquarters will be in Cairo.
